21st Century Citizenship, September 2020: Small

Thirty-plus years ago, a relatively rare event occured in publishing–an economist wrote an international best-seller. Though the author was not fond of the title–he presciently complained it would become a catchphrase–Ernst Schumacher’s “Small Is Beautiful” was a shout into the canyon of existence that echoes down to today.  We yearn for simplicity, our economy relies on small business for job creation & innovation, and the twin terrors of modernity–technology and globalization–actually provide unprecedented opportunities for the small in scale.  And yet everywhere smallness looks to be endangered…
