Author Stephen Covey, he of the Seven Habits, has said that in life, we go through three stages of maturity: dependence, independence, and interdependence. Applied to nations, one can’t help but observe that we declared ourselves into the second stage nearly 250 years ago. Like mid-lifers in crisis, and despite the new administration’s best efforts to put forward a powerful message of tolerance, we seem to be having a hard time accepting the need to move forward–or to realize how important it’s become that we become the united states again…
